Bilingual Education / ESL

Purpose of the Program

Bilingual Spanish Education Program is a full-time program of instruction in which both Spanish and English are used to teach the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The amount of instruction in each language is aligned with students’ level of proficiency in the native language and in English along with their level of academic achievement. The English development component of the instructional framework is designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Elementary (PK-5th Grade)

(6th Grade- Metro Elementary)

Corpus Christi ISD's Transitional bilingual/early exit model is a bilingual program in which students identified as English learners are served in both English and Spanish and are prepared to meet reclassification criteria to be successful in English-only instruction not earlier than two or later than five years after the student enrolls in school. (§89.1210. Program Content and Design)

Corpus Christi ISD's ESL content-based program model in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade provides  instruction using second language acquisition strategies to teach English to students who speak other languages other than Spanish or English. The academic program model teaches the state-required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Secondary (6th-12th Grade)

The English as a Second Language Pull-Out Program (ESL) gives students who are classified as English Learners (EL) the opportunity to receive services that support their English language acquisition.  Students will be placed in courses according to their English language proficiency.  The English intensive instruction is designed with the goals to improve students’ English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
