Veterans Memorial High School's welding class recently dedicated time to prepare for, and participate in, the Industrial Craft competition at the Houston Rodeo.

Senior Maddie Shepheard, who served as the team’s material manager, approached her second competition experience with enthusiasm. The team, comprised of direct and indirect contributors, recognized the significance of effective communication during the project.

The scheduling process involved identifying tasks that required the most time and attention. This strategy facilitated efficient resource allocation as well as allowed the team to pinpoint critical milestones in the project. Maddie’s role included maintaining a list of materials coming in and out of the workshop, ensuring the team had the necessary resources at all times. The project demanded meticulous planning, and the team created a detailed timeline to ensure a smooth workflow. Safety was crucial as well, with the team implementing measures to protect themselves and their work environment. Welding masks, gloves, and other safety gear were standard, and the team regularly conducted safety briefings to reinforce the importance of adherence to safety protocols.

"This event has so many variables the students had to face,” said welding instructor Juan Castillo. "Although they didn't place this time, it was a great learning experience for them."
