As the Region 2 recipient, Dr. Hernandez will now advance to compete for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award. The award recognizes superintendents who demonstrate exceptional leadership in improving student achievement, improving the quality of education in their districts and fostering public support and community involvement in education.

In 2024, Dr. Hernandez was named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association. He was also a state finalist for the Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year award in 2020.

“This recognition is a testament to Dr. Hernandez’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the students, staff and families of CCISD,” said Board President Dolly Gonzales Trolley. “We are proud to see his work recognized at the regional level and wish him the very best as he advances in the Texas Superintendent of the Year competition.”

Dr. Hernandez was named the Superintendent of CCISD in 2014 and has nearly 30 years of administrative experience. He earned his bachelor's degree from Texas State University, his master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.

State finalists for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award will be announced in the fall.
