At 10 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, the Corpus Christ Independent School District held a drawing to determine the order in which candidates’ names will be placed on the November 3, 2026, ballot for the district’s board of trustees election.
Candidates were asked to draw to determine ballot placement for their respective race.

Deborah Zambrano, an AVID teacher at Cunningham Middle School at South Park, was recognized as Teacher of the Month!
The council also recognized Operation K.E.Y.S. – Keep Every Youth in School, highlighting the importance of encouraging students to stay in school and succeed.

Mrs. Caldera, a kindergarten bilingual teacher at Galvan Elementary School, has been named a Top 3 finalist for Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year! 👏🍎
She believes students learn best when they feel safe, cared for and connected at school. Her love for teaching also goes beyond CCISD. This summer, she spent time teaching in Africa! We are so proud of Mrs. Caldera and wish her the best of luck in the next round of the Teacher of the Year selection.
Denise Caldera is a kindergarten bilingual teacher at Galvan Elementary in Corpus Christi ISD, where she creates a nurturing, inclusive classroom that supports students’ academic, social, cultural and linguistic development. She is committed to bilingualism and biliteracy and believes meaningful learning begins when students feel safe, valued and connected. Caldera holds a Master of Science in Educational Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, as well as associate degrees in teaching and Spanish from Del Mar College. Named the 2026 Corpus Christi ISD Teacher of the Year, Caldera has also earned Master and Exemplary designations from the Texas Education Agency and recognition from Texas State Rep. Adam Hinojosa. Her leadership extends beyond the classroom through service as a grade-level chair, new teacher mentor, LPAC representative, curriculum writer, and tutor for migrant, homeless and shelter-based students.

The finalists represent school districts from across Texas and bring distinct experiences and approaches to leading their students, staff, and communities. They were selected from 16 regional nominees following interviews conducted Aug. 21-22 by a committee of Texas school board members.
Corpus Christi ISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez is among the five leaders named state finalists. Hernandez has served as superintendent of Corpus Christi ISD since 2014. The district serves more than 32,000 students on the Gulf Coast.
Committee members cited Hernandez’s strong advocacy for public education and his ability to lead through complex challenges with a clear sense of shared responsibility and purpose on behalf of students.
Hernandez earned a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin as a Cooperative Superintendency Program fellow with an emphasis in public affairs and social work, a master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, and a Bachelor of Science from Texas State University.
“Great superintendents understand that leadership is about bringing people together around a shared commitment to students,” said TASB Acting Executive Director Tiffany Dunne-Oldfield. “These five finalists have demonstrated the vision, collaboration, and dedication it takes to lead strong public schools. Their work also reflects what is possible when superintendents and locally elected school boards work together to serve their communities.”
The Superintendent of the Year program has recognized excellence in Texas public school administration since 1984. Candidates are evaluated on their leadership skills, commitment to improving student outcomes, board and community relations, fiscal management, advocacy for public education, and dedication to continuous improvement and innovation.
The Superintendent of the Year selection process begins each year with nominations submitted by local school boards. Regional selection committees at each Education Service Center review nominees and select regional winners, who then advance to the state selection process.
The finalists will advance to the final stage of the selection process at txEDCON, the largest annual gathering of public education leaders hosted by TASB and the Texas Association of School Administrators. The 2026 Superintendent of the Year will be announced Oct. 10 at txEDCON in Houston. The award program is sponsored by Balfour.

The November 2026 ballot will include three open seats on the Corpus Christi ISD school board. Three incumbents have filed for re-election, along with four additional candidates seeking election to the three seats.
Trustees are volunteers who serve staggered, four-year terms in one of four district positions or one of three at-large seats.

Who’s ready for something supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? ☂️
The grant will help launch CCISD's Coastal Bend STEM Initiative, which will create STEM Innovation Labs across a vertically aligned group of elementary, middle and high school campuses. The project will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and a continuous pathway to develop skills in engineering, robotics, computer-aided design and emerging technologies.
“We are incredibly grateful for this $100,000 investment in the future of our students,” said Dr. Roland Hernandez, CCISD Superintendent. “This grant will help us bring our Coastal Bend STEM Initiative to life by creating innovative STEM labs where students can explore, create and solve real-world problems. We are excited to strengthen our STEM pathway that prepares our students for future careers.”
Four district administrators have been selected for recognition by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as regional Outstanding Principals and Assistant Principals of the Year.
The honorees are:

Corpus Christi ISD has named Teresa Toliver as Director of Career and Technical Education.
Toliver most recently served as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program Manager at Alief ISD in Houston. She also has extensive experience in CTE curriculum and instruction through her roles as CTE Student Development Specialist and as a classroom teacher.
The CTE Department provides students with an authentic environment to explore their future, including hands-on learning, career exploration and skill development.
She holds a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southwest Texas State University.
“We are excited to welcome Mrs. Toliver to CCISD and appreciate the experience and expertise she brings to our Career and Technical Education programs,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “Her leadership will help us continue providing meaningful opportunities for our students to explore their interests and prepare for success in college and future careers.”
